Ithaca Creek State School

Projects / Education & Research

The new General Learning Building at Ithaca Creek State School was opened at the end of 2021. It delivered eight general learning spaces and several external learning areas. The building is located adjacent to the campus’s heritage listed entry building and stairs. As such, it had to respond to this context in a thoughtful manner. To do this the new building presented a high-quality brick façade to the street, which respected the entry buildings proportion and construction methods. It also had the added benefit of providing a screening element to both the circulation spaces and internal light wells.

The planning of the new building utilised a central corridor which ran between the two main stairs and the outdoor leaning spaces. This arrangement allowed for natural light to access the central spaces of the building. In addition, the planning built on the school’s desire for students to engage with the surrounding environment. To do this the buildings circulation path end’s at the schools main outdoor space while also orientating the classrooms to have a view of the main fig tree. This was seen as a key element which would complement the school’s pedagogies.
