Clovelly Terrace

Projects / Residential

Alterations and additions to this heritage listed terrace in Sydney’s Clovelly contained three key facets; the restoration of the heritage façade, the rehabilitation of the interior detailing and the reinterpretation for the new addition. The resulting aesthetic is homage to the traditional terrace that is aligned to a comfortable, elegant interior which blends old and new with clean lines and simplicity. Treating the addition as a separate portion allowed us to create a lightwell separating the parts which bought light and natural ventilation deep into the buildings plan but most importantly it allowed us to engage with original heritage portion of the home and its detailing. As a result one is aware where the heritage component of the home starts and where it ends

Our approach to this home is one of sympathetic contrast where we consider the context, materiality and detailing and apply it in a way that while contrasting with the original, implies familiarity In this project we took the fine detailing of the original home and applied it to the structure of the addition so that it became the decoration

The project effectively doubled the area of this 4.3m wide terrace and provided greater connection with its garden. The home was altered from its largely original state to include a new two story extension resulting in the addition of three bedrooms, a study, two bathrooms, open-plan kitchen, living and dining room and a sitting room/library. Our design reinstated a “Juliette” balcony and doubled arched front window to match the adjacent property.
